![]() ![]() The counterpoint used in this clip is the percussion played through the cup. This short eight second clip I have selected is an example of Monophonic with contrapuntal devices. There are numerous videos floating around the internet of people breaking their cups attempting to video their song. Obviously the cups are plastic or made of a shatter proof material as the video would result in glass smashing everywhere. A few years back it was a common thing on the internet to make YouTube videos of yourself or with others making songs out of banging cups in different ways on a surface. This is a cover of the song ‘When I’m Gone’ by Lulu and The Lampshades. Homophonic: Take The Power Back – Rage Against The Machine (First Verse).Monophonic: The Cup Song – Cal & Ray (00:18 – 00:26).I’m going to be looking at three examples of polyphonic, monophonic and homophonic that also use contrapuntal devices. It is essentially one melody with accompaniment such as chords, either playing the same rhythm as the melody, or just jamming along. Homophonic is the most common musical texture nowadays. It can be either the composer writing the melody with slight differences on each instrument, or it can be down to simply improvisation taking over the musicians brain. Heterophonic textures tend to crop up more frequently within South African music or Middle Eastern music. It is essentially a melody line played by two or more musicians, with slight differences played differently with each performer. Heterophonic is perhaps the rarest of the musical textures within music as it rarely crops up within western music. Polyphonic means many sounds and is when more than one melodic line are present, they have equal importance and are performed at the same time, effectively overlapping each other. Polyphonic textures can be performed by one stand alone musician on instruments such as piano or harmonium. A very common example of this would be Happy Birthday which is sang alone and has one melody through out (unless you have that embarrassing family member who attempts harmonising it AKA my uncle). The texture contains one melodic line that can be played on any instrument whether it be a sitar or someone singing their heart out. ![]() Textures within music are split off into four different segments each with different names and definitions of how that certain texture works. ![]()
